Well, now that we've cleared a bit of the air, I'll describe what this site is about. I've been doing Java development on Linux for 3+ years now. I've accumulated a fair bit of knowledge over this period of time, but it's all been through trial and error. Whenever I was looking for a tool for doing Java on Linux, I was always struck by one of two problems:
I mean no offense to maintainers of other web sites. They're goals are different from mine, and indeed, by at least providing a list of tools, I had somewhere to start from. The only problem was that I had a long period of, "download, install, evaluate, delete" before I could accomplish anything usefull.
Which brings us to this site! The goal of jLinux.org is to provide a relative terse guide to the reality of developing Java code in a Linux world. Instead of just listing tools, I provide a very brief set of pros & cons about each tool. I hope this will allow people to quickly determine which tool is the right one for them. The idea is that if you're looking for something specific, it should take you about 5 minutes to get to where you are going.
With a few rare exceptions, I only put up tools I myself have used enough to form opinions about. To the extent that I violate these rules, you can expect that it's because I'm interested in trying out that tool! You'll find the pros & cons clearly are influenced by my own prejudices. That being said, I always try to be specific about why I like/dislike something, so that even if you disagree with my prejudices, you can determine what's the right tool for you.
Finally, a word of caution. This site is still VERY new, so it's limited in terms of content. If you see something which is missing, please feel free to let me know. I very much view this web site as a collaborative work.
